Dusty Springfield was the soul siren with the huge, smoky voice and eyes to match. She burst on to the scene with I Only Want To Be With You in 1963 and her iconic appearance, and a voice dripping with pure emotion, brought her international fame.
"Her music still sounds great today, more than 40 years after she recorded it,” says Company editor Victoria White. “Amazing!” What’s more, in the 80s and 90s, her career was revived thanks to a collaboration with The Pet Shop Boys and the inclusion of Son of a Preacher Man on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.
Image-wise, over-the-top falsies framed Dusty’s kohl-rimmed eyes, topped off with heavy charcoal shadow and statement brows. The focus on the eyes meant the rest of her make-up was underplayed – porcelain skin and ultra-pale lipstick finished the look. Company’s beauty editor Sophie Qureshi says, “Dusty’s 60s beehive hair and smoky eyes were copied all over Britain – and we’re still copying them now!”
Big eyes, big hair and an even bigger voice – Dusty is much missed, but her style will live on forever.
