When Sarah Harding decided on a radical colour change earlier this month she chose leading hair expert Mathew Soobroy at Charles Worthington in London to do it for her. He runs a bespoke 'Atelier' hair style consultancy for anyone thinking of going for a big, scary 'can I really pull it off' change.
"Sarah came in and was keen to do something radical so I put a few dark coloured wigs on her first so she could see what they'd look like. The aim is to see what colour would most suit your skin tone, face shape and personality. They completely changed her look and she felt confident enough to actually go for it," he says.
"To achieve her blonde to brunette, rich deep chocolate brown, you need to pre-colour the hair to act as a base. I used brown and copper filler and processed for 20 minutes. Then after taking it off I rinsed and blast dried the hair to prepare for the final shade - a mixture of natural brown with an iridescent dark brown ammonia free colour. She'll need top ups fortnightly for the next two applications and then a monthly colour after that. For her cut, I reduced the length by a few inches using a razor to achieve a shattered finish, then took out weight and added a sliced effect layer to texture. To finish and style the look I blow dried using an elixir oil to retain moisture and shine, randomly ironed over sections to give it edge and put in a low side parting to get the look. Finish using a definition paste to separate and define."
