Start with a white nail polish and another colour of your choice. Try to use one that only requires one coat for full coverage, and a bright colour works best to get the best fade effect! Use foil as your mixing palette!

Paint your thumb with your bright polish, without any white added.

On a piece of foil, add a couple of drops of the bright polish and one drop of white. Mix together with the brush of the pink polish and quickly apply to the nail (it can dry fast!)
The brush can be wiped down with an acetone soaked cotton pad after each nail to prevent letting your 'new shade' mixing with the bright polish and changing its colour.

Gradually alter the ratio of white to bright polish for each nail, so on the last one you're only adding a tiny bit of the bright polsih to a blob of white polish on the foil.

Finish with a quick dry topcoat like Seche Vite to give it a glossy, professional look.
