Getting a Spray Tan: Step-by-step

spray tan article
Exposing your pale skin after six months of hiding it under black tights, skinnys or leggings is a very scary thought - and now that the weather is warming up, even maxi skirts look too covered. So what's the answer to not scaring people with your pasty pins?

Okay, it's not exactly revolutionary, but fake tan has an amazing way of making you look and feel ready for summer. It somehow makes you look healthier, thinner and more toned, which in turn make you feel as good as you look.

There are two ways of achieving that bronzed glow - the DIY way at home, or by getting a spray tan. And after team Company got an amazing Sienna X spray tan, with no risks of streaks or patches, we think we might be converted! If you've never had a spray tan then it can be a bit of a frightening prospect with quite a few questions, like... 'will you turn TOWIE orange?' or 'will you have to get naked in front of a stranger?'!

We're here to let you know exactly what happens every step of the way when you get a spray tan - and also give you the best advice from Sienna X...

Before your spray tan
• Exfoliate and moisturise the night before the tan (not on the day of the tan), paying particular attention to elbows, knees, ankles and problem dry areas
• Paint nails and toenails, especially if artificial, so that they don't smudge and you don't have to use nail polish remover after your tan
• Wax/shave at least 24/48 hours prior to treatment. This allows the pores time to close. Dotting in pores may appear if not adhered to
• Avoid using deodorant and perfume prior to your tan

During your spray tan
• Take off all your make-up and only apply moisturiser to your skin if it is very dry, as otherwise you may block off the tan
• Remove all your jewellery
• Undress. You can wear a bikini, but remember that you will get lines wherever you are covered - they can provide paper pants and don't be shy if you go topless, remember they have seen it all before!
• The spray will take about 10 minutes and your therapist will tell you which way to turn and when

After your spray tan • Wear dark loose clothing for after your treatment. Tight clothing or underwear may cause marks
• Wear flipflops or loose fitting shoes
• Do not shower or bathe for the development period (at least 8 hours) after your tan
• Do not exercise or swim during the development period
• Pat dry after showering
• Avoid long bathing sessions as this may affect the longevity of your tan

The tan works best and lasts longest if you let it dry overnight and shower in the morning - revealing a beautiful, natural tan. Use dedicated moisturiser and exfoliator every day (Sienna X do some amazing ones)to prolong the tan and you will be so sunkissed you will be gagging to get into those shorts!
