Roxanne Pallett - our celebrity short story author!
Simon Schofield, the man I was promised to, but who in return was promised to his work as a junior real estate officer. He who had taken me away on this holiday with the promise of a romantic renaissance of a premature honeymoon. He who had spent more time pressing his Blackberry's buttons than mine. Who at this very moment of deceit, was meeting his work deadline back at the hotel, unbeknown to him that I had just met my 'deadline', twice, on a boat with a man I'd just met an hour ago.
The waves where hissing in melodic chants as they mingled with the sand around my bare feet. A flock of seagulls flew over as I wandered back to the hotel with the sweet taste of guilt coating my lips like the sugar to a frosted margarita glass. The birds flew ahead squealing down at me in judgement.
''Where have you been, I've been worried sick'' Simon asked, not even looking up from his Mac.
''I went for a walk to clear my head'' I lied.
''Jess, I don't like it when we argue, you know I have to work'' he preached in that parental tone that wore stale like an imitation perfume.
''Fine'' I sighed, staring into the mirror wiping off the day's decoupage which was written all over my face in the smudged makeup and rummaged hair.
I slipped under the crisp white sheets as he returned from his phone conversation on the balcony.
''You'll be pleased to know my boss is now here, so from tomorrow I'm all yours.''
I smiled and buried the evening's drunken synopsis of events beneath the covers which carried the cargo of my husband to be.
''I invited him to join us for breakfast, so you can win me some brownie points with that smile of yours'' he said affectionately.
''Course'' I nodded.
Looking up from the a la carte breakfast menu I began to find solace in my black coffee. I reasoned with myself over the frivolous fling with the beautiful stranger. I repeated the same lines over in my head until I believed them. 'It never happened... Everyone's allowed one slip up, so to speak.. I'll never see him again so Simon will never know.'
''Jess.... Jess!'' Simon exclaimed nudging me across the table, awakening me from the flashback of the passionate clinch which had me hypnotised.
''My boss is here...'' He stirred getting up from his seat. I looked around in a consulted daze to find that the figure coming towards us was the same figure that had peeled my clothes off only twelve hours ago.
''Jess, this is my boss, Michael Quinn. Michael, this is my fiancee Jessica'' Simon continued with enthusiasm as our introduction was that of an epic silence.
''Did you come on the boat Michael? You should see it Jess, it's really something''
