When we popped down to The Green Carnation in Soho on Wednesday night we were blown away by what we saw. Lisa Mitchell is effortlessly cool and nicely kooky. Her kookiness in fact reminds me of the lead singer of The Asteroids Galaxy Tour we recommended to you in our September issue, although that's where the similarity ends. Her sound has already been described as candy-coated folk-pop with a fierce dark heart, (think a mix between Laura Marling and Regina Spekto) and you know what? They're right. But what's so great about this girl is it's so hard to pigeon-hole her into anything else on your iPod right now.
Here's her set list:
Neapolitan Dreams
Coin Laundry
Clean White Love
Pirouette
Oh Hark
Her songs are like very organic lullabies, with a blend of the sweet and savage as she strums away on her many guitars. We loved her singles Neapolitan Dreams and Coin Laundry, the latter being a kooky song about wanting to meet a boy at the laundry.
This girl only came 6th in Australia's version of Pop Idol (she was born in England, but moved Down Under aged 3) so imagine someone a bit too quirky for the voters on their sofas to get but super-talented and you get Lisa. And she's only 19. Wow. Trust us, you'll like her. A lot. We can't get her off our stereo right now.
Her album 'Wonder' is out now and she tours the UK next month.
