Sweet about her: Gabriella Cilmi

gabriella cilmi

So we're here at Hare and Tortoise enjoying a sushi lunch together. Do you cook much?
I cook a bit - all my family are Italian and are amazing cooks. Every Sunday when I'm back in Australia we go to my Grandma's house for a big lunch. I've learnt to make some good pasta and polenta dishes and I make a great cherry tomato sauce. But mainly I love eating out - especially sushi!

Your new album, Ten, is out now. What can people expect?
I set out to write a modern disco record. I wanted to take a risk with the new album, to do something different. The album was also influenced by Gloria Gaynor's ‘I will survive'.

Is there a single that you're particularly excited about?
I'm really excited about Hearts Don't Lie because that's the second single coming out. It's got this really funky base line inspired by Betty Davis- I love Betty Davis! I just shot the video for it at Brixton academy - it's actually got this really nice art deco feel and was kind like a big party.

There are a lot of British female singers out there at the moment. Do you think there's a real female empowerment thing going on?
Go girl power! Yeah - there's a massive wave of really talented women out there right now. I'm just about to go on tour with Leona Lewis - she's got an amazing voice. But what are the guys doing? Where are they? They need to get their act together. We're showing them up!!!

High-Five to that sister. Talking of guys any celeb crushes?
Hmmm. I love Andre 3000 - he's got great style and really talented and have you seen that film where he takes his shirt off. He's hot!

We saw you on T4's fashion show Frock Me.
Yeah that was funny - Henry Holland had me talking about my embarrassing outfits.

Have you always been quite into fashion?
Because my mum was a fashion designer, I kind of rebelled against fashion in my teenage years. I wouldn't wear what she wanted me to wear. I'd always be walking around in my army pants, dressed a bit like Sporty Spice. I was also a really big fan of Suzy Quattro so I used to have leather pants and a leather jacket. I'd go to the biker shop to buy biker boots. But I'm more into fashion now.

Where do you like to shop now?
I live not far from Portobello so I love going to the market at the weekends and having a hot chocolate at this place called Garcia's and hitting the stalls for clothes. There are also loads of great Australian designers that I really like -all my amazing jewellery comes from a designer in Melbourne.

Any style icons?
I love Alexa Chung and the way she mixes frock dresses with brogues in a kooky way and I also really love Bianca Jagger's style - that whole 70s boho look is really cool! I would have loved to be born in the seventies - everyone just looked so cool and making music in the seventies would have been really cool too.

hanks Gabriella. Now time to tuck into this sushi!
