One Wednesday afternoon and one phone call later, it was destined that my friend Jennie and I were off to Exit Festival in Serbia – we were beyond excited!
Given that we would be travelling to much warmer climes, usual festival necessities like wellies were substituted with bikinis...
The flight was three hours from London to Belgrade; then two hours transfer to our destination Novi Sad; winding our way through sleepy Alpine-like villages and gorgeous greenery... -

The festival is in the magical surrounds of a Petrovaradin fortress overlooking the banks of the River Danube. The setting could not be any more spectacular and is a myriad of castle walls, cobbled streets, courtyards and crazy underground tunnels. The view from the top boasts amazing views over Novi Sad and up there you can relax on beautiful loungers in sumptuous surroundings and almost forget you are even at a festival – no mud involved!

Exit Festival – in its twelfth year - is now a major player on the worldwide festival circuit, hitting critical acclaim and being nominated for several awards. The line up for the 4-day event was pretty solid, featuring old-school favourites such as Pulp, Jamiroquai and Portishead; indie faves Arcade Fire; dance stalwarts Groove Armada, Deadmau5 and Underworld; and also presenting hot up-and-coming acts such as Magnetic Man, Gramophonedzie and many more...

There are 20 different stages in total at the festival - from reggae to electronic to rock to dance it caters well for any music lover and we had immense fun walking around and having a boogie at each of them. However none are more atmospheric than the main stage! Friday night we caught Editors in action then hot-footed it to the dance arena to watch new hot Ibiza DJ Maya Jane Coles’ blinding set....amaze!!

One thing for which we became infinitely grateful after all-night dancing was to slink back to a lovely hotel bed rather than the usual festival abode of a tent and we habitually ate breakfast before hitting the sack...!

Sunrise was a sight to behold– the sky alighting magnificent hues of red and orange –we were now at the Elektrana stage, getting our groove on to old classics such as “Good Life” by Inner City – brilliant!

Daytimes were all about the City Beach – with plenty of Balearic-style beach bars and packed to the rafters with like-minded young revellers; the city beach is the perfect place to chill after a night’s dancing at the festival. With day-time temperatures reaching a scorching 40 degrees each day taking a dip in the River Danube was an absolute must in the sweltering Serbian heat.

Saturday night headliner was Jamiroquai who wowed the crowd with old favourites such as “Deeper Underground” “Cosmic Girl” and. The crowd was jam-packed and Jen and I sang and danced like maniacs!
Jay Kay never disappoints with his eclectic choice of statement headpieces; and tonight he sported a huge feathered number – in a little tribute to him I adorned a feather headdress of my own prompting a few gasps and strokes from drunken festival goers! -

With our dancing feet firmly on form and new friends in tow it was then time to head back to the dance arena for a spot of Fedde Le Grand and Groove Armada who played an eclectic mix of funky electro beats then on to the Latino stage – Jen’s sultry salsa dancing was an instant hit with all around her, even instigating an impromptu limbo and was definitely one of the highlights of the weekend!

On Sunday our last night before the festival Jen and I desperately needed some decent rocket fuel and luckily managed to find quite possibly the best Italian restaurant in Serbia – La Piazza located a handy 5 minute taxi ride from the festival. The food was absolutely scrumptious and service fantastic (you can even write a postcard which they will send on for you – great touch!) well recommended for anyone visiting Novi Sad.

We loved our weekend at Exit in Serbia – if you are looking for a different festival experience somewhere where the weather is guaranteed with a great vibe this should definitely be on your hit-list! Add to the mix mega-cheap food and drink and you are definitely onto a winner!
