Spirit of Burgas,festival Spirit of Burgas: Photo Diary Im Gudrun Vickery, Companys bloggers in boots for the Spirit of Burgas festival in Bulgaria. I was sent off to explore this eastern European music festival not knowing what to expect, but definitely up for having some fun!

Spirit of Burgas,festival Spirit of Burgas: Photo Diary I stayed in a resort on the black sea coast of Bulgaria called Sunny Beach; the name says it all - its very hot and there is a beautiful 8km beach. Its a huge, sprawling, purpose built holiday town with endless restaurants, bars and shops, where you can even get every cuisine under the sun, including a beef roast dinner if youre home sick.

Spirit of Burgas,festival Spirit of Burgas: Photo Diary - I arrived at our apartment, in the Mariner Hotel, at the ungodly hour of 5am, after a coach journey where the enthusiastic 18-30 rep, Ginge, tried to get everyone in the party spirit We were greeted with shots of an unidentified spirit and reminded that the bar is open 24hours a day! The next morning it was a nice surprise to find a balcony overlooking the pool, which was drenched with dance music that kick started each day at 11am!

Spirit of Burgas,festival Spirit of Burgas: Photo Diary Having a few days to spare before the festival we headed straight to the beach that was only a short walk from the apartment passed the plethora of tourist stalls. Bulgaria has an amazing coastline, with low lying hills and clear blue water. The life guards along the beach had brilliant bay watch style huts, red shorts and even the classic lifesaving buoys. I was convinced wed see the Hoff jogging along the seafront.

Being a holiday package resort there were families and couples mixed in with the twenty-something fun seekers, who couldnt get enough of the foam parties, sweating out in the midday heat. I didnt take part, but it did look like a lot of fun

Spirit of Burgas,festival Spirit of Burgas: Photo Diary Venturing out of the resort to some of the surrounding towns that have still retained an element of historic charm, despite the huge tourist influx. The old quarter of Nessebar, a fifteen minute drive from Sunny Beach, is on a windswept peninsular that juts out into the sea, and we ate seafood in a restaurant with a beautiful view of an old ship and bobbing little fishing boats.

Spirit of Burgas,festival Spirit of Burgas: Photo Diary The Spirit of Burgas festival takes place on Burgas beach, on the edge of the city. Its a lovely setting, and it was a treat walking around the festival bare foot in the sand. Skunk Anansie and Moby headlined the main stage on Saturday, with the crowd going pretty mental and singing along to all the classics.

Spirit of Burgas,festival Spirit of Burgas: Photo Diary There are 5 stages playing various types of music, from dub to jazz - we saw a great band called Brasilacoustic on the Blues and Jazz stage. There were people in fancy dress and on stilts wandering around, and games to play - we lost at a very drunken round of twister.

Spirit of Burgas,festival Spirit of Burgas: Photo Diary One of the best features of the festival was the Becks karaoke stage, complete with instruments, where people could go up and sing their favourite track in front of a green screen that was then turned into a stage fit for a rock star.

Spirit of Burgas,festival Spirit of Burgas: Photo Diary Bulgaria's coast is beautiful and there is definitely the opportunity to have a lot of fun in Sunny Beach. The Spirit of Burgas is a relatively new festival but the organisers managed to get a respectable line-up of big names that attracted thousands of people; the atmosphere and the people were very friendly. Wed be pleased to go back next year.
