As expected, Jonathan Ross didn't shy away from joking about the Andrew Sachs affair as he returned to his job presenting 'Friday Night with Jonathan Ross' yesterday.
The chastened star, who had been suspended for three months without pay following the incident where he and Russell Brand left offensive messages on the answering machine of veteran 'Fawty Towers' actor Andrew Sachs, pre-recorded the show yesterday but found time for a heartfelt apology among the jokes.
On a show that featured Tom Cruise and Stephen Fry, he joked about George Bush leaving office, quoting how he had once said: "I believe human beings and fish can co-exist peacefully."
He then added: "What sort of idiot would say stuff like that knowing it was going to be broadcast?"
"On that subject, there cant be many viewers who arent aware this show hasnt been on recently and the reason for its absence.
"Im going to take this opportunity to apologise for what I said on the radio because being on the BBC and allowed this level of freedom to communicate with people is a great privilege.
"Its something Ive always enjoyed and I value enormously.
"In future I do intend to be more aware of the responsibility that comes with such a gift. But as the kids say, it was my bad, so I do apologise for any hurt or distress it has caused."
The show is broadcast on BBC1 tonight at 10.35. Which only leaves an hour to kill after 'Celebrity Big Brother'!
