According to US blogger Perez Hilton, the sports star, also known as A-Rod, split with the 'Almost Famous' actress because she was "too high maintenance". But the man did date Madonna, right?
The source blabbed: "Kate wanted more camera time each and every game. She would always want to be styled before games and she'd insist on front-row seats.
"It was a turn-off to have a girlfriend who always wanted to be on camera. Alex wanted someone who was more interested in building a long-term relationship than just building their profile."
The blonde star, who has five-year-old son Ryder Russell with musician ex-husband Chris Robinson, brought mother Goldie Hawn along with her to the 'Nine' premiere in New York last night, in which she stars alongside Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and Dame Judi Dench.
The source continued: "He's just coming off of a 13-year relationship with his ex-wife and a recent divorce.
"He has two lovely children with his ex-wife, and that requires a certain amount of responsibility. She gave him ultimatums that a newly divorced father can't meet."
Apparently the split was amicable and the pair remain good friends. Although we doubt she'll be sending him a Christmas card this year...
