Cameron Diaz in What happens in Vegas

Cameron Diaz reveals to Getlippy what really happened in Vegas and why she won't gamble on another man...

Playing a woman getting over a big break-up with some wild living has turned out to be just what the love doctor ordered for Cameron Diaz.

Romantic comedy What Happens in Vegas is partly also the story of what really happened to a heartbroken Cameron following her split from pop hunk Justin Timberlake.

The offer to shoot a movie in Las Vegas with prankster Ashton Kutcher was too good to be true for the actress who was looking for fun ventures to get over her man trouble.

Ironically, her character also turned out to be getting over a break-up with some fun, only she goes all the way with a quickie wedding she is too drunk to remember, and a $3 million jackpot win to her one-night-stand groom that she can't bear the morning after.

Lately, Cameron has been linked to a string of eligible men, including most recently Jennifer Aniston's ex Paul Sculfor and fellow Brit Gerard Butler. Generally, she has partied, surfed, holidayed and worked her way back to her usual happy self.

Here Cameron talks how she couldn't wait to gamble on a Sin City fling but how her fear of commitment means she's not risking it all with another relationship just yet.

Q: What made you want to do this movie?

A: "It just sounded like a great excuse to spend a fun summer making a fun movie...and in Vegas! I love Vegas."

Q: What was it like working with Ashton Kutcher?

A: "We had so much fun. He's a fun guy. We never stopped laughing."

Q: Were you worried about getting Punk'd?

A: "No. He wouldn't have dared (laughs). He knows I would get him back."

Q: The movie starts off with you and Ashton on a one-night-stand. How do you deal with love scenes in movies?

A: "It's weird (laughs). It is uncomfortable at first being intimate with someone who is not your partner but it's just a job. You're in a room with 50 people and a camera so it's all make believe to everyone."

Q: Your character is in Vegas to get over a break up. How do you cope with a break up?

A: "You just get through it. It's never fun but you just have to get over it and get back to knowing yourself and what makes you happy."

Q: There has been a lot of talk recently about who you might or might not be dating. How do you cope with that?

A: "By not discussing it. Everyone has to understand that, surely? I mean, it is hard enough to keep something like that together and working without my spilling little bits of information all over the place. You have to keep it all back for yourself, all the private stuff, or else you go insane!"

Q: Apparently you also have a crush on Pamela Anderson?

A: "Absolutely (laughs). I love Pamela Anderson. The first time you lay eyes on Pam you are taken by her. It's a universal thing. She has that power over all mankind. And she's sweet and lovely."

Q: Have you ever had a problem with exes trying to sell stories about you?

A: "No. No one has ever done that. I'm lucky to have picked pretty good people in my life."

Q: How do cope being a sex symbol and being scrutinised over your fashion sense?

A: "I don't give a s*** what anybody thinks. I think we all have to take time to laugh at ourselves and not be so worried about our image. We would all be a lot more relaxed and happier in life, I believe, if we can just let ourselves go and not be inhibited by what other people might think or whether we might be embarrassing ourselves. Honestly, I really just do not pay attention to any of it. I'm a pretty simple person and a happy person. I think you can be happy anywhere, doing anything, wearing anything."

Q: So you're not into all that Hollywood glamour?

A: "People won't believe me but I'm not into wearing sexy clothes or looking super-feminine. I never have been. I like jeans and sweaters and feeling comfortable rather than trying to show off my body or whatever. I get a kick out of dressing up now and then or when I'm in a film and it suits my character to look super sexy, but in ordinary life I don't like attracting attention to myself or playing off my looks."

Q: What is your beauty secret?

A: "Are you kidding? I don't have one. What girls need to know is if they had make-up people touching them up all the time they too would look amazing in there own way."

Q: What do you do on your typical day off?

A: "I really don't have any typical days off. Every day is different for me. The only consistent things are breakfast and working out. I always try to get those into my schedule no matter what."

Q: How do you keep fit?

A: I love hiking, surfing, swimming, playing golf. I'm an outdoors kinda girl."

Q: You seem to have managed to keep your feet on the ground despite your success.

A: "I like to think so, yeah. I just don't have any expectations. If you just want to be really laid back and not be stressed out and just cruise through life, just have no expectations whatsoever. When you don't have expectations you're not worried about whether or not you're going to reach them or if you fall short of them or if something is better than it could be or worse than it could be. You just kind of have what it is and for me that works best."

Q: Has your interest in green issues and your travels to environmentally challenged countries helped your mindset? Is that something you want to do more of?

A: "Absolutely. I learned so much with Trippin' (Cameron's MTV series). The next time around I'm going to be able to an even better job. I was just thankful to be able to have the opportunity to do it because I didn't want to waste the chance, the opportunity. I feel like even if you just reach one person, that really makes a difference and you never know what that person is going to be doing in their life that will help influence others."

Q: You went to Bhutan and India. What is it that draws you to countries most people don't know how to spell?

A: "First just to be able to see those parts of the world, I mean, is just amazing. We went to the desert we went to the rainforest and that was all just to show what our planet is, you know? How people exist and how we are endangering these places are. I wanted to show our behavior as human beings and how it affects the planet and the environment and in turn how that affects us because it all comes back around. We went to Africa, the Serengeti; we went to Chile, to Costa Rica and Honduras, Yellowstone, Bhutan and Nepal."

Q: Has it changed you?

A: "Yeah, I think I have a deeper understanding of it. I have a deeper appreciation for what I have but also to know that there is a balance. You go to places where people are just living with what they need and you really understand what balance there is. You know, you give back to what you take from and that balance is perpetuated if you keep it going. Now, when I bring something into my house I always think, ‘How can I reuse this?' I don't want to just throw it back out. I hate bringing stuff to my house that I can't utilise."

Q: A lot of celebrities drive hybrid cars now but I think you were one of the first.

A: "Yeah, I got one of the first models. I think Leo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and I were the first. It just made sense to me. I drive around LA all day long and when I heard that there was a car that would let me drive around all day long without using half the gas that I would normally it just made sense to me. For so many reasons - one emissions, two, why use a resource more than you have to?"

Q: So you've figured out the secret of success in Hollywood?

A: "(Laughs) Yeah. Don't want something. I never wanted to be famous. I never wanted to be rich. I never wanted to be the top actress or paid the highest in Hollywood. I never wanted any of the things that people think that they're supposed to aspire to. I've never wanted those things. All I've ever wanted to do was to make movies and have fun. I feel incredibly fortunate that I've gotten to do that."

Q: How hard is it to find good roles for women in Hollywood?

A: "There are a lot of great roles out there but my problem is that I'm just so bad at commitment. I hate committing myself to anything because I have to be really sure that I'm going to be happy doing something. It's just the way I am. I don't want to be like that and I'm sure I'll suffer for it later in life. But I'm happy right now."

Q: I hear there is going to be a Shrek 4.

A: "That's what I hear. I'm just waiting for the call because it takes like years to make those movies. I think the next one is out in 2010."

Q: Is it weird being known as a green ogre?

A: "That's actually all I'm known for with kids but I like that. It's so sweet when they come up to ask about Shrek. I'm very proud of those movies."
