The Oscars 2009 : Hugh Jackman
The star of this year\'s Academy Awards was without doubt master of ceremonies, Hugh Jackman. Hugh, who asked Ricky Gervais to help him write some jokes for the evening, opened the Oscars with a spoof musical interpretation of this year\'s biggest films, including The Dark Knight, Milk, Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.
Celebrity,Film,Freida Pinto
Freida Pinto
This girl has yet to step a foot wrong in the style stakes and once again she looks breath-taking in this John Galliano gown. Showing how to work the one-shoulder trend well the deep blue is perfect against Freida Pinto\'s skin and dark features whilst the sparkling embellishments and tiered lace keep things looking young and fun.

Celebrity,Film,Kate Winslet
Kate Winslet
As much as we love Kate Winslet she really needs to take a lesson in the red carpet dress code. The one-shoulder cut of this Yves Saint Laurent dress just doesn\'t work and it looks like the other strap has simply been lopped off at the last minute. The black lace addition to one side of the dress is also a little confusing and, whilst we love the fitted bodice of the top half of the dress, we would have liked to have seen Kate\'s sizzling curves in something a little more figure-hugging.

The Oscars 2009 : Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway
Half way through the opening number, Hugh stormed the front row of the theatre and scooped Anne Hathaway into his arms. The pair then returned to the stage for a duet paying homage to Frost/Nixon which got a standing ovation from the star-studded crowd.

Amanda Seyfried
Oh Amanda, orange? Spaghetti straps? Really? There\'s so much going wrong with this Valentino Haute Couture dress it\'s hard to know where to start. The colour is completely wrong for Amanda\'a fair complexion and icy blonde hair and we know bows are big this season but there\'s a time and a place to throw yourself into a trend and the red carpet just isn\'t the place. The whole ensemble looks like a satin sheet has been wrapped round her and pinned into place by the oversized matching bow. The shoes and accessories are also a complete miss-match. Come on Amanda we know you can do better!

Celebrity,Film,Penelope Cruz
Penelope Cruz
After seeing Penelope work that just ravished look in Vicky Christina Barcelona we expected a lot more from her at the Oscars. This flowing vintage Balmain gown has far too many ruffles going on and the colour does nothing for her dark features. Where are the flowing silky locks? Where\'s the sex? Leave the cream lace and plain hair to someone else next time Penelope and show us some of that Spanish flair we know is in you!
Celebrity,Film,Penelope Cruz
The Oscars 2009 : Penelope Cruz
Picking up the first award of the evening was the gorgeous Penelope Cruz, who got so excited that she nearly passed out. Collecting the award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona Penelope swooned, "Has anybody ever fainted here? Because I might be the first one!"

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
As one half of the world\'s most famous couple you would have thought Angelina would make a little bit more of an effort to impress on the red carpet, for our sake at least. Yes the style and cut of this Ellie Saab dress looks good on Angelina but for a woman who must have had her pick of every designer and dress going we would have hoped for a splash if colour other than the everyday jade drop earrings.

The Oscars 2009 : Jennifer Anniston
Jennifer Aniston, who was on prize giving duties alongside Jack Black, avoided the red carpet but was game for a laugh with photographers back stage. Earlier on when Jennifer and Jack were presenting, the producers of the show were left looking a tad pathetic as they cut away to Brangelina about six times but failed to get that much-wanted stink-eye shot.

Mickey Rourke
A white suit is never a good option for any occasion let alone when teamed with a black waistcoat, and are those chains we see trailing underneath your blazer Mickey? We know you\'re having a bit of a moment and are enjoying a comeback after 15 years in the shadows but it\'s never a good idea to make the headlines for wearing something a man your sons age would step out in.

Anne Hathaway
Wearing her best smile and trademark red carpet lipstick, Anne Hathaway shines in this Armani Prive gown. The shimmering sequins really work against her porcelain skin and she\'s made a wise choice by keeping her accessories to an absolute minimum.

The Oscars 2009 : Slumdog Millionaire
Slumdog Millionaire picked up a whopping eight Oscars including Best Director and Best Picture. Danny Boyle stunned the audience as he leapt up and down like a mental as he took to the stage to accept his Best Director award. He later explained, "My kids are too old to remember this now but, when they were much younger, I swore to them if this miracle ever happened, I would receive it in the spirit of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh, and that\'s what that was." Sporting a dangerously heavily adorned arm, Heidi Klum shows the world that she\'s still got it in this RM by Roland Mouret red gown. Extra kudos to Seal too for standing out from the crowd with a stylish skinny tie.

The Oscars 2009 : Kate Winslet
Good old Kate Winslet made us all proud as she picked up her much deserved Oscar for Best Actress. "I\'d be lying if I haven\'t made a version of this speech before. I think I was probably eight years old and staring into the bathroom mirror and this would have been a shampoo bottle. Well it\'s not a shampoo bottle now."

The Oscars 2009 : Ben Stiller and Natalie Portman
Bringing home the funny was comedian Ben Stiller who arrived on stage along with Natalie Portman to present the award for Best Cinematography dressed like Joaquin Phoenix. Ben had the crowd in hysterics as he ripped the actor-turned rapper\'s recent weird appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.

A vision amongst a sea of black Natalie Portman looks effortlessly glamorous in this strapless flowing gown. In typical Portman style she\'s kept the accessories subtle which really works with the intricate swirls of the fitted bodice of this dress.

Miley Cyrus
Looking like a fairy princess this Zuhair Murad gown is the perfect red carpet dress for someone as young as Miley Cyrus. The belt doesn\'t work but she just about gets away with it by keeping the accessories to an absolute minimum.

The Oscars 2009 : Hugh Jackman and Beyonce
As the Oscars show boat hit half time, Hugh Jackman was back for another song and dance number paying homage to the Hollywood musical. Hugh was joined on stage by Beyoncé, Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper. The jolly sextet performed songs from musicals including Chicago and Moulin Rouge.

Beyonce
Looking unusually bling-free Beyonce is wearing what can only be described as a curtain on the red carpet. She\'s tried to pare things down by keeping the rest of her look simple but the large gold floral print and fish tail just don\'t work.

Zac Efron Vanessa Hudgens
High School Musical stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens make an adorable couple although we think Vanessa should have opted for something a little younger with more colour than this strapless Marchesa gown. The petals on the bodice and sequin embellishments modernise the dress a little but the fish tail is best left on someone a little older.
Celebrity,Heath Ledger,Film
The Oscars 2009 : Legder family
Accepting the award for Best Supporting Actor on behalf the late Heath Ledger were his parents Kim and Sally and his sister Kate: "Heath, we both knew what you had created in the Joker was extraordinarily special and had even talked about being here on this very day. We really wish you were, but we proudly accept this award on behalf of your beautiful Matilda. Thank you."
Next photo: Marisa Tomei is swamped by her own dress
Celebrity,Marisa Tomei,Film
Marisa Tomei
Marisa Tomei took a big risk when she stepped out in this Versace gown and, whilst we admire her courage, this dress is one pleat too far for our liking. The colour and nipped in waist look great but there\'s far too much dress for someone as petite as Marisa who looks so swamped she must have needed an entourage to help her walk off the carpet.
Celebrity,Film
Amy Adams
Red is always a difficult colour to wear on the carpet as you risk blending in with your surroundings which Amy Adams does a bit here. Colour aside this gown by Carolina Herrera is a great curve flatterer although the clashing Fred Leighton necklace lets things down a little.

Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys sizzles in this strapless fuchsia dress. The flowing waves in her hair and the diamond drop earrings compliment this gown perfectly whilst the thigh-revealing slit brings some of Alicia\'s trademark sexiness to the red carpet.
Celebrity,Sarah Jessica Parker,Film
Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker gets the balance between chic and volume just right in this Dior Haute Couture gown. The gold sequinned swirls add a touch of sophistication to the bodice and SJP has got the length just right for her frame, although it would be nice to see her working a different style of dress sometime soon.

The Oscars 2009 : Sean Penn
"You commie homo-loving sons of guns," said Sean Penn as he collected the Oscar for Best Actor. "I did not expect this, and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me, often, but I am touched by the appreciation."
