If you've failed to get caught up in the whole Twilight/Robert Pattinson steam train of a phenomenon, but still fancy dipping your toe into a vampire series, then True Blood is a must-watch. From the makers of Six Feet Under, this dark comedy/drama is like a Twilight for grown-ups (i.e. there's way more sex and it's much funnier). Set in Louisiana, the premise is that vampires walk amongst the living and, thanks to the invention of a bottled human-blood substitute, they can now get their sustenance from the supermarket. For many, vampires have become acceptable (maybe even a little cool), but in Bon Temps, the small town where True Blood is set, most of the inhabitants are none-too-thrilled about the idea of blood-suckers walking around. The action centres around Merlotte's Bar & Grill, which is a dreary but fun bar filled with colourful characters. Waitress Sookie (Anna Paquin), who works there, can hear people's thoughts (which isn't as much fun as you might think), everyone that is except Bill - enter True Blood's own RPatz (Brit actor Stephen Moyer, and Anna Paquin's real life boyfriend), who turns out to be the bar's first ever vampire customer. Sookie's connection with Bill is immediate and before long she's risking her life to save him from the local drug dealers who attempt to drain his blood and sell it on the blackmarket - turns out vampire blood is the drug of choice for many around Bon Temps!
Smarter, sexier and funnier than Twilight, the first episode of True Blood certainly didn't disappoint. And we're already itching to see the second episode. No wonder it's the biggest TV hit in the US since Heroes. We've already series linked it on the Sky Plus! Hooked already. Let us know what you think.......
