Xuma

brighton bar xuma

What is it?

Xuma named after a beach in California, an Aztec god and a Neil Young album, this trendy little number is positioned like a battle ship on the infamous Seven Dial round-about. Based on the site of the former Brighton Artists' Gallery, Xuma has been running since 2006 and has worked up a reputable name for its self being referred to as ‘the most characterful bar-cum-gallery' in the area.

Why it's hot?

Differentiating from the trend of Brighton bars featuring naff student artwork, Xuma is seen as a proper gallery which focuses on quality, one off pieces of artwork for an instant hit of culture.

Bartenders?

What can I say? The staff are quick, fit, dancing and cocktail flipping and they make buying a drink a pleasure.

Vibe?

Occasional live music and regular DJ sets from Friday to Sunday playing an eclectic mix of funk, soul, world music, hip-hop and dub step will get you in the spirit of the weekend.

The slick black & red décor with Georgian & Regency inspired furnishings encompassing chez lounges, chandeliers and quilted leather sofas gives it a real feel of class and connection with the style of this period building. Candle lit tables add that extra touch of comfort and intimacy which is necessary for a bar of this calibre. They also have a small downstairs area for private social occasions, which could also be perfect for a birthday gathering.

Drinks?

There's a fine selection of wines and cocktails all reasonably priced out of happy hour. The Bombay Bramble whipped up by an equally tasty barman made with Gin, Chambourg, Lemon juice and Sugar exponentially hit the spot. But for those end of the month bargain days, happy hour is between 4-8pm every day offering £1 of drafts/house doubles and £8.50 for a bottle of house wine.
