From the moment you enter the Scarlet Hotel through electric doors, the hotel lobby immediately knocks you out, panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows frame a gorgeous scene of the Cornish sea side you simply couldnt dream of a prettier setting. But the Scarlet doesnt take a back seat to the views, it is wickedly slick and gutsy, decorated with flashes of colour and humour borrowing from Londons Soho Hotel school of cool. The kitsch Missoni-print sofas and the funky local art, there is no reception area you are greeted and sit down to chat with the cool staff! We are shown around an interconnecting nest of terraces, bars, lounges, restaurant, library and chill-out-room-cum-yoga-studio, all spread over three tiered levels.
The Scarlet is light years ahead of other coastal properties its innovative design heralds a new era of high-end eco luxury in the UK. It is gorgeous, but the eco element here is no less than 101 sustainable initiatives, including a biomass boiler system, rain-water harvesting, solar panelling, locally sourced food and a 10% discount for guests arriving by foot, bike or public transport.
The vibe here is completely unpretentious. Its a grown-ups only hotel and blissfully free of screaming kids, perfect for a romantic getaway or a girlie spa weekend. The rooms are categorised as Just Right, Generous, Unique, Spacious and Indulgent, all 37 are roomy and sun-drenched, laid out in open-plan style - bathtubs stand within the bedroom. They come with a flat screen TV, hanging felt lamps, wood-stencilled wall trees and, with our Just Right room, a hypnotic sea views. Rooms are not supplied with tea & coffee machines oh no, you ring and they bring them to your room - its perfect! The canvas-tented spa, within the heart of the hotel offers Ayurvedic treatments include seaweed baths, hammam body scrubs and deep-tissue massages, which you can follow with relaxation time in the steam room, sauna or heated indoor pool, and conclude with a snooze in one of the hanging womb-like cushioned pods. Also make sure to check out the lipstick-red hot tubs. Set at the edge of the reed-filtered outdoor pool with soaring views over Mawgan Porth beach, a steep 100-foot-long stroll below, heated by a log-fired burner and filled with bundles of seaweed, algae and other mineral-rich ingredients...
The Scarlet Restaurant champions local produce, with a menu that changes according to the flavours of the month. The menu has been created by Michelin star-winning local Ben Tunnicliffe and, unlike many hotel dining experiences, our evening meal felt like a real night out, we were spoilt rotten and made to feel like the only pair in the restaurant. We ate Slow braised pork set in its own jelly and obster and Marrow ravioli with spring onions, chervil and parsley to start followed by Pan fried John Dory, roasted garlic crushed Cornish earlies, wild garlic, cockle and parsley sauce and Charred Rib of St Ives Beef with caramelised shallots, salsa verde and griddled polenta. Dessert was of course the amazing cheese board and chocolate dessert to die for.
Doubles from £180, including breakfast. Mains in the restaurant from £15. Spa treatments from £35.
