Two miles north of Newquay, overlooking the beach, the hotel also owns a watersports school and two restaurants. An airy reception leads to The Living Space, with picture windows, perfect for a welcoming glass of wine. At the Extreme Academy you can surf, waveski, paddleboard or kitesurf (from £30 for a half-day lesson); you can also hire everything from boogie boards (£8 a day) to wetsuits. We didn't go surfing - we were happy to just watch!
Our Ocean Wing room had a south-west-facing balconies, while the cheaper Coach House rooms are brand new. Our contemporary beach-chic suite had all reclaimed solid oak floors and distressed white tongue-and-groove bedsteads. While the hotel doesnt skimp on mod cons (think plasma screens, MP3 docking stations and four-jet showers made for two), the best feature in our room was the free-standing bath strategically placed by double doors opening out to a sea view.
To dine you have an excellent choice, Fifteen Cornwall, the Jamie Oliver-inspired restaurant is connected to the hotel that trains chefs from disadvantaged backgrounds. This is booked solidly during the summer months so we chose to eat in the hotels Brasserie (£28 for three courses), My steak and mustard mash was divine. The only downside was the view of the car park rather than the ocean! Stay at The Hotel & Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay and they will treat you to a FREE dinner at the Jamie Oliver inspired restaurant, Fifteen Cornwall! From 9th22nd July inclusive, stay any day of the week for two or more nights for the ultimate foodie break in Cornwall. So if you can slip away before the summer is in full swing, please call now, as places are limited! Price: From £235 per room per night, based on two sharing, including breakfast. As well as Watergate Bay, Newquays best beaches include Fistral, a mile-long stretch thats a magnet for surfers; Crantock, less busy in high summer and the locals choice; secluded Polly Joke, reachable only on foot. The areas superb walks take in tranquil villages and coves, with lovely cliff-top views out to sea and across farmland.
Starting in Autumn 2011, the hotels indoor and outdoor swimming pools will be redeveloped (which is much needed) and work is due to start on the interiors for the new swimming pool, gym, treatment rooms and lovely snug with awesome sea views. So a return journey next summer is already being planned!! For more information, visit watergatebay.co.uk/uk
