Detox your wardrobe this January

The results of a survey released by Cancer Research UK today (Wednesday 12 January 2011) reveal almost a third of people in a relationship (31 per cent) feel annoyed by their partner leaving piles of messy clothes scattered across the floor. The charity carried out the survey to coincide with its ‘Detox Your Wardrobe’ campaign, which calls on the nation to donate clothes they don’t wear to their local Cancer Research UK shop.

A whopping 44 per cent of women surveyed admit to feeling annoyed with their partners over their tendency to leave their clothes on the floor but a quarter of men (24 per cent) claim that their partners are guilty of cramming too much into the wardrobe! What’s more, of those that found their partners habits annoying, a massive 62 per cent were annoyed at least once a week with 11 per cent feeling the rage daily!

‘Detox Your Wardrobe’ is fronted by TV presenter and journalist Dawn Porter, who lost her mother to breast cancer when she was a child. Dawn joins the charity in urging people to not only detox their diets this January but to detox their wardrobes too, by clearing out clothes they don’t wear and donating them to their local Cancer Research UK shop. Each bag of goods can be worth up to £30 and will help fund the charity’s lifesaving work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Dawn Porter said: “I’m a total nightmare when it comes to leaving clothes around. I have little piles of clothes everywhere and it really annoys my boyfriend. I’ve actually warned him I will never have tidy shoes, it’s just not happening and there’s no point in pretending!

“I’ve moved house recently and been forced to detox my wardrobe. To be honest if I only owned one vest and a pair of jeans they’d probably live on the floor but the detox has been really good for me and I think everyone could benefit from a good January clear out. Take anything that’s lurking in the back of your wardrobe and taking up valuable space to your nearest Cancer Research UK shop to help raise vital funds for research into cancer, helping to save more lives and keep families like mine, who have been affected by cancer, together.’’

Further responses to the poll reveal that the hoarding of too many bags and pairs of shoes is a bone of contention for many men, a situation reminiscent of the ‘Sex and the City’ episode where Carrie and boyfriend Aidan have a biting war-of-words over their rights to the wardrobe. Of the male respondents, 22% per cent cited an overflow of shoes taking up too much space as a bugbear and 19% per cent named surplus bags an irritant.

Amie Ibrahimi-Brown, head of retail marketing at Cancer Research UK, said: “An overstuffed wardrobe can be bad for your fashion karma, but the results of this survey suggest that it could also be taxing on your relationship!

“My advice to couples is not to let their wardrobe wars escalate out of control. The cold, dark January nights offer the perfect opportunity to stay in and have a good clear out. Cancer Research UK shops are delighted to receive donations of clothes, shoes and accessories to sell on in the shops and the money raised helps to fund our vital research into cancer.”

To donate good quality clothing and accessories, or any homeware, books, DVDs and CDs simply hand in your donation bags to one of the 600 Cancer Research UK stores nationwide.
