Diary of a Fashion Insider: The Golden Globes

" For once, I found myself in the same country as a big U.S celebrity awards ceremony; no sitting up until 4am to watch the world’s biggest stars burst into tears during the acceptance speeches or redden in rage at Ricky Gervais’ chastising quips. Yes, it was the Golden Globes!

Rightly or wrongly I was perhaps looking forward a little more to Ricky’s outbursts than celebrity stick insects making us feel bad about eating our way through house and home over the holidays. Ok, it is the poor man’s Oscars but with Ricky employed to spice things up a bit and designers keen to display their very best wares, I did expect a little more, well, spice.

Elle Macpherson looked gorgeous as always, choosing a fishtail dress by U.S designer Zac Posen. There’s something about her Aussie vibe that seamlessly carries off beach perfection, even in a red carpet gown. Zac Posen also did a good job with Reese Witherspoon, trussing her up a la Julia Roberts circa ‘Pretty-Woman goes to the opera’; simple yet stylish. Sadly, Zac’s reputation was to take a MAJOR nosedive thanks to Kelly Osbourne’s ill-fitting dress…ouch. Ok, ok, the hair technician also has a lot to answer for…it simply failed on every single level.

The flesh tones had become somewhat tired after the millionth powdery celeb was interviewed on the red carpet. Some of them even looked like they weren’t wearing anything at all - and not in a good way. If I had to choose I’d say Jessica Alba and her Gucci beaded gown probably won out the boring taupe tones – if indeed anyone wins wearing a version of such drear.

There was a lot of talk about Michelle Williams; a fab actress and she did look good in her Jason Wu number. Rather embarrassingly Victoria Beckham tweeted during the festivities “my favourite actress Michelle Williams wearing #victoriabeckham!!!” the picture attached was clearly an image from last year’s BAFTAS – oops. Perhaps she wasn’t aware of the Globes that night - maybe because no one of any significance chose to wear VB.

My personal winner had to be Salma Hayek in Gucci – what a body; she clearly didn't chow down the Quality Street over Christmas. Tilda Swinton came a close second in a lilac Haider Ackermann tuxedo gown. She always dresses with a slight masculine edge and this look – with that ‘do’ - made her cut a strikingly statuesque form. Good to see at least one invitee taking a bit of a risk.

Madonna got it wrong yet again but I think we’d be more surprised if she actually got it right. The gloves really provided the cherry on top of this messy, downright nasty outfit. God forbid her hands would actually give away her age particularly if seen near her wrinkle-free face. The collar certainly doesn’t match the cuffs there.

Warm up act over, we are merely weeks away from the real thing; The Oscars held on February 26th – and this cat can’t wait to get among the pigeons…!"
