Uggs: The Story Behind The Boots...

Rising from the depths of alternative culture to the forefront of fashion, the now omnipresent Ugg boots have become synonymous with casual and cosy chic style – and the story of their growing popularity is just as interesting as the lives of the celebrities that have made the boots footwear must-haves!

Despite being a relatively recent fashion phenomenon, Uggs have been kicking around for a long time, and their true origin is shrouded with controversy. Some claim they were first manufactured in Australia in 1933, others believe they were first invented in 1971. Either way, the sheepskin boots were initially used as utilitarian footwear, prized for their comfort and warmth, before being adopted by Aussie – and later American – surfers in the 1970s, who wore them to keep warm between surf sessions. They’re most popular with women, but surfer dudes are big fans too!

Uggs began gracing the pages of celebrity gossip magazines in 2001 when the likes of Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez and fashion icon Sarah Jessica Parker were spotted stepping out in the cosy footwear. Even Hollywood heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio is a fan! Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey then featured the Ugg brand on her show’s ‘Favorite Things’ slot, and the world was hooked.

Ugg boots are now a wardrobe staple, with celebs across the globe frequently papped in a pair, which show remarkable fashion versatility. While they’re commonly worn with thick tights and chunky knits during crisp, chilly weather, it’s not unusual to see them with bare legs at the beach, or even dressed up for a night on the town. The tough, durable nature of the boots mean they can take whatever your life throws at them. However, the style has also provoked something of a fashion backlash, with fashion faux pas summed up in this tutorial.

Black and tan Uggs are by far the most common classics – thanks to their versatility they can be worn with almost anything. But as the boots’ popularity has grown, so too has the range of styles available. Choose from a rainbow of shades, or go for a pair with knitted detail to add extra interest to your outfit – perfect for pairing with chunky jumpers to keep warm on blustery days.

But the choice doesn’t stop there; Ugg has brought its classic style bang up to date for 2012 with new designs: high-shine Uggs can dress up an otherwise casual outfit, whereas sparkle designs are perfect for a night on the town, or even just to add a touch of festive glam to your Christmas wardrobe. The range even includes wedding boots, for Ugg-loving brides-to-be.

How strange to think that in Australia the famous Ugg boots are simply worn as slippers or on the beach between surf sessions!
