You’ll receive proper training – and being a good journalist is absolutely vital. The contacts you make will last your whole career too.2. Start bloggingWe found the last two girls we hired at Company via their blogs. I’m always on the hunt for funny fashion blogs. They’re a great way to get yourself noticed.3. Any experience is good.Local luxury magazines launch in every town and all fashion brands need editorial content written for them. Not being based in London is no excuse. The Barbour office is based in the North East and Boohoo.com is in Manchester. Offer to help with their social media or start a blog for them.4. Bet platform agnosticThat means knowing how to write, take photos, use Photoshop, HTML coding and more – there’s more chance you’ll have what an editor is looking for and, once in the job, you’ll know how to help extend their brand.5. Get to know your customerI began my retail career at 16 as a Saturday girl in Laura Ashley, Marble Arch. The best buyers start on the shop floor because you get first-hand contact with the customer.2. Prepare to take a pay cutI was assistant manager at Laura Ashley, heading up a team of 13 when I took the plunge into buying. I had a salary drop and went back to tea-making and filing but it was worth it in the long run.3. Forget the glamourYes, I get to travel, but the reality of my trips is sitting in a factory looking for a fabric that the Oasis customer will love. You won’t be front row at fashion week!4. Learn from mistakesI once ordered 10,000 metres of fabric instead of 1,000. I had spent twice my annual salary by mistake! I had to beg the supplier not to put the order through and luckily he didn’t. I never did that again.5. Link InLinkedIn is great for networking and keeping on top of latest news. 1. Use uni to networkThe actual degree isn’t essential, but it can be a great place to make connections in the industry – lecturers, tutors and peers, especially the designers, as you never know if you have a budding Galliano in your midst!2. Make intern applications countSpend time researching the company you really want to join and prepare a well-researched email to the correct person. Check spellings and names over and over!3. Immerse yourself in fashionThe more new people you meet, the more doors you’ll open. Sign up to mailing lists and RSVP to as many relevant events as you can. Find listings on Fashion Monitor and Diary Directory. And when out and about... network!4. Admit weaknessesSell yourself well but know your weaknesses too. You are human and will be hired on a good personality as much as your academic ability and work experience. Never lie, you will be found out.5. Respect client confidentialityNever disclose private client info to members of the press. Tread carefully when alcohol is involved; informal meetings with clients or press can become disastrous quite quickly. -

Don't feel the uni pressureI didn’t go to uni and instead got all my experience on the shop floor from the age of 18. It gives you experience, a wage and avoids student debt.2. Practice in your local shopping centreAsk to do a display or organise a local fashion show. It will help you understand your own creative aesthetic and gives you some experience to chat about in interviews.3. Get on the moveYou might not get work experience in London as it’s so competitive. Be prepared to travel across the UK. I got my best experiences by going south of London to set openings of new stores.4. Get to know new designersCommunicate with them about up-and-coming trends and styles for future seasons, so you can plan your designs accordingly and make sure they’re bang on trend.5. Set goalsWrite a six month plan of how you want to progress. I’ve always known how quickly I want things to happen and haven’t shied away from asking for it. -

If you want your own show at #LFW, here are designer Fred Butler's top 5 tips:1. Choose Your Course CarefullyThere are loads of specialist courses now compared to my uni days, from embroidery at Edinburgh to creative directing at London’s Central St Martins. Look at tutors as well as course content. I chose a course with a year abroad so I could spend time working in New York.2. Start a blogIt allows you to create your own online profile while writing about other creatives you like. I love writing www.fredbutlerstyle.blogspot.co.uk and it has helped me get attention.3. Shadow someone you admireAnd pursue them. I worked with Shona Heath and learnt from the roots up. Interns can fly up to become designers within a year, and it’s a tiny industry so make sure you’re nice to everyone.4. Find a sponsorPutting on a presentation at LFW isn’t cheap, so finding a sponsor that will pay helps. This season I’m working with Red Bull and I’d never be able to do my show or film without their help. Just make sure your sponsor matches your brand. Money doesn’t come for free.5. Don't say yes to everythingWhen things start taking off you’ll be asked to put your name to lots of projects. Collabing with the wrong brand can destroy your integrity early. -

1. AssistEvery stylist begins their career assisting. Hunt down your favourite stylists, email them and when they don’t reply, email again! I assisted Simon Chilvers at The Guardian. Word of mouth is vital so impress everyone you meet on the way up.2. Organise test shootsHook up with some up-and-coming photographers or designers and start shooting. Or style your mates before a night out or event. This will give you confidence in your own style and develop your technique.3. Get ClothesThe hardest bit of starting out is not being able to borrow clothes. Raid your own and your friends’ wardrobes, buy and return items for shoots and even ask senior stylists if you can borrow clothes from them.4. Wait for a good agentThey get you jobs, and deal with the whole money side. But you need a body of work before you’ll get one so don’t try too soon or you’ll end up with the wrong one. I joined Frank, which was great for me.5. Update your websiteAdding your most current work and keeping it looking slick is vital – it’s your portfolio. Use Google logistics to improve your search engine optimisation.
